Shingle Cracking and Splitting: How Are They Different?

Shingle Cracking

During the manufacturing process, volatiles – chemicals with a low boiling point – are added to the asphalt mix to give the roofing material flexibility and waterproofing capabilities. Long-term exposure to the elements, however, causes the asphalt shingles to lose these volatiles, showing signs of drying, cracking and shrinking. Aging is the most common cause of cracks, though this problem can also happen to newer asphalt shingles, especially those with a weak base matting or excessive filler material added to the asphalt mix.

Shingle Splitting

This roofing problem, meanwhile, happens due to the roofing material expanding and contracting as they are being exposed to extreme temperature changes. The underlying joints between the asphalt shingles are subjected to stress, reducing their adhesion. Shingle splitting exposes the roof to further damage as a result of wind uplift and leakage.

How Are They Different?

A thorough inspection by a local roofing contractor will help identify whether the asphalt shingle damage is either a crack or a split. The former appears as a series of branching fissures on the roofing material’s surface, ranging from small, hairline cracks to bigger, more obvious ones. The latter, meanwhile, appears as longer lines that run parallel to each other, moving in one direction and can run horizontally, vertically or diagonally.
